Opie’s Madonna & Madonna Major

She was a pretty sorrel mare with four white socks and blaze. Opie’s Madonna was a 1973 daughter of Sir Quincy Dan a sire of 13 AQHA Champions, and 6 AQHA World Champions. Opie was an AQHA Champion with AQHA Superior in Western Pleasure, Hunter Under Saddle and Western Riding placing 5th at the 1976 AQHA World Show in Junior Western Riding.

Opie was purchased in 1981 through the Oregon trainer Bob Avila to be a youth horse for Nancy MacDonald. Her conformation, disposition and athleticism would make her a superb addition to the MacDonald Quarter Horse broodmare band. She was shown to a Youth ROM and earned points in Western Riding, Western Horsemanship, Western Pleasure, Hunt Seat Equitation, Reining and Working Cow Horse. Opie and Nancy won all around youth awards as well as many year end awards in the AQHA. Opie was shown by Jenny MacDonald to finish her AQHA Superior Award in Western Riding.

From being an outstanding performer Opie went on to become an excellent broodmare, producing 15 foals with 7 being AQHA point earners. Among her foals are:

Tabitha Major was Champion of the Vanderhoof Western Pleasure Futurity as a two year old. She was started in cutting, and became a great heeling and calf roping horse: competing as a heeling horse at rodeos in Alberta, B.C. and Arizona. Her 3 foals have earned money in steer wrestling, calf roping and team roping.

Emerald Major was Co-Reserve Champion of the 1989 Canadian Supreme Snaffle Bit Futurity.

Dynamic Major was Champion of the Billy Miner Days Snaffle Bit Futurity, Finalist World Championship Snaffle Bit Futurity-Reno, Nevada, Champion Canadian Supreme Open Snaffle Bit Futurity and the Canadian Supreme Snaffle Bit Futurity, Third Canadian Supreme Cutting Futurity, Wyoming Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion, Qualified for the National Finals Snaffle Bit Futurity. Dynamic, at 17, is now owned by ten year old Janeal Hoff who is currently showing him at open shows in all events.

Major Challenge, 1993 Reserve Champion 3 Year Old Canadian Supreme Open Working Cow Horse, Reserve Champion Canadian Supreme Snaffle Bit Futurity, Reserve Champion Canadian Supreme Non Pro Snaffle Bit Futurity and Reserve Champion Limited Open/Non Pro 3 & 4 Year Old Working Cow Horse and Champion Canadian Supreme Non Pro Reining.

Chromatic Major, the 1991 sorrel gelding, affectionately known as “Dig” by the Butterfield family of Ponoka, Alberta. Owned by Bud Butterfield and shown by granddaughter Brook to the title of Miss Rodeo Canada. Notably “Dig” was the hazing horse who helped Chance Butterfield reach the 2003 & 2004 National High School Rodeo finals in the US, and achieve the 2004 Canadian High School Rodeo Championship in Steer Wrestling.

Majors Fancy Dan was 3rd in the Canadian Supreme Non-Pro Reining Futurity in 1995, 2/3 Non Pro 3 & 4 Year Old Reining Canadian Supreme 1996.

Maverick Major, 1996 Champion Canadian Supreme Non Pro Snaffle Bit Futurity, Reserve Champion 1996 ARCHA Non Pro Snaffle Bit Futurity and 1997 Champion Canadian Supreme Non Pro 3 & 4 Year Old Snaffle Bit Futurity.
