Major Rene – Stallion – 2003 Inductee

He was a STALLION…he was BLACK…and he was a BEAUTY! Sired by the legendary Major Bonanza and out of the Tiger Leo (AAA, AQHA Champion, ROM Racing, Reining and Cutting) daughter, Tiger Rene.

Ridden by Bob Avila, Major Rene was the 1984 Oregon Quarter Horse Association Champion in Senior Cutting. Major Rene’s show career may not have been the page after page computer printout record brag book that we are so used to seeing. He was not a bold-as-brass, in-your-face kind of stallion. He was that elegantly attired gentleman in the black tuxedo famous for his impeccable manners, with champagne glass raised, toasting that most beautiful woman across the crowded room with his eyes. One look from him and you melted.

He lived the better part of his life quietly, serenely going about his business with his beloved mares at MacDonald Quarter Horses in Springbank, west of Calgary. Gordie MacDonald rode Major Rene whenever there was cow work to do on the ranch. Rene was the most powerful horse Gordie has ever ridden. He was a superior athlete, versatile, with a keen mind and sensitive disposition. AND (here’s the clincher) what he did have was that one rare quality that every breeder, whatever breed of horse, prays and hopes for – that their stallion’s bloodline runs true…and true it did. The versatility in performance events and wonderful disposition ran right into the hearts of his sons and daughters. His offspring have been winners in Reining, Working Cow Horse, Cutting, Roping, Cattle Penning, Barrel Racing and Jumping. They are the ones that did their Daddy proud!

His get have won the Canadian Supreme Snaffle Bit Futurities in 1989, 1991, 1992 and 1999!!!! Some of his winners include:

Major Rene died peacefully in his sleep March 10, 2003. He will be missed for the outstanding disposition and versatility of his foals.
